For the new year everyone likes to make personal goals like losing 10 pounds, stop smoking and buying a new home. This new year make it a personal goal to renew your bland job searching skills and start being more aggressive in your search. Below are 10 ways that you can do this.
1. Open an account on ZoomInfo.com. This is the largest database of professionals and headhunters are always on this site. This will help to increase your chances of getting noticed.
2. Write a list of 5-10 employers that you want to work for. I have stated this before in my blog, but I feel that it is worth mentioning again. This will allow you to be focused and not waste your time searching the internet for jobs that don't fit with what you do now.
3. Know your value. This includes knowing what you currently make and what you are worth. If this question come up you want to know where you stand. Especially if they come back with an offer.
4. Find ways to be different. After to interview, get their email address or find them on Linkedin.com and send them a thank you note for the interview. Send your resume in a larger font. Bottom line make sure that you stand out from everyone else that is applying for the same job(just make sure that it is in a professional way).
5. Ask your current and past employer for recommendations of Linkedin.com. I used to ask for a letter of reccomendation whenever I left a job. This was often hard to get(even though they may have offered it because, people get overwhelmed and forgetful) Getting a reccomendation throughLinkedin.com is an easier way for them, and this will allow you to look good to hiring prospects without looking suspicious to your current employer.
6. Get rid of a "lifeless" resume. Think of articles and blogs that you have read. They all have "white space" and headers to make it easier to read. This also means allowing your personality to shine though. Note you skills, hobbies and associations on the bottom of the resume. If you were the go to guy in solving problems note that. etc.
7. Save your employer money before they hire you. Tell your prospective employer how you have saved your company money in the past or solved problems to make things better for your previous employers. Employers are always looking for employees who have something "extra" to bring to the table.
8. Put "action words" on your resume. Be descriptive so to get the hiring manager "involved" in your resume.
9. Analyze job descriptions and tailer the keywords in your resume to them. If the jobs that you are applying for want outside sales experience, make sure to put that into your resume(as long as you have it).
10. create an image to match the salary that you are looking for. Make sure that everything from your resume, dress, presentation, speak and overall appearance match the job that you are looking for.
